Gasteiz could be the European Green Capital
Gasteiz is among the six European cities on the shortlist for the 2012 and 2012 European Green Capital environmental award. It will compete with Barcelona (Spain), Malmó (Sweden), Nantes (France), Nuremberg (Germany) and Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, a candidate country to join the EU. The winners will be announced at a ceremony to be held in Stockholm, the current Green Capital, at the end of October.

San Sebastián short listed to be European Cultural Capital in 2016
San Sebastián está cada vez más cerca de convertirse en Capital Europea de la Cultura en 2016. El proyecto donostiarra ha pasado el corte y sigue adelante en la lucha por hacerse con la capitalidad. San Sebastián is a step closer to being the European Capital of Culture in 2016. Its project has got through the first round and will now continue to work towards being named as the Cultural Capital.

Urkullu calls for international support for peace in the Basque Country
The EAJ-PNV EBB Chairman, Iñigo Urkullu, has called in Rome for international support for peace in the Basque Country. Urkullu stressed that "EAJ-PNV is working behind the scenes for peace and I am sure it will receive the support and backing of the people present here".

Iñigo Urkullu: “We aspire to foster a new Basque PEACE programme”
The EAJ-PNV EEB Chairman, Iñigo Urkullu, was entrusted with opening the second and last session of the "III Bilbao Dialogues: a world in transformation", where the focus was on "The American Bicentenaries: Looking towards the Future". Urkullu highlighted five areas in his speech: Socio-economic context; Shared Values. A common world view; Foreign policy and geo-strategic importance; Shared values. A common world view; and Entrenched traces of violence (Latin America-Basque Country). His thoughts in this last area, where he referred to ETA: "We aspire to foster a new Basque PEACE programme through ADOS"

Izaskun Bilbao denounces the poor performance of the regional participation envisaged in the Lisbon Treaty
The EAJ-PNV Euro Member of Parliament, Izaskun Bilbao, has denounced the poor performance of the mechanisms envisaged in the Lisbon Treaty to ensure the participation of the regions in the control of the community legislation. Since the treaty came into force, the European institutions have only received 7% of the possible responses to the tests by means of which the states and regions can express their opinion about whether or not community legislation respects their competences.

Francesco Cossiga, farewell
EAK-PNV expressed its great dismay on learning of the death of the former President of the Republic of Italy, Francesco Cossiga. It also passed on its condolences to his family and friends, to whom the party wrote personally, and to all of the citizens and institutions of Italy.

“Kosovo‘s independence is an exercise of common sense, a triumph of freedom and democracy”
The Basque National Party has expressed its satisfaction "regarding the decision issued by the Hague Court of Justice which found that the declaration of independence by Kosovo does not breach any precept of international law". It went on to said that it "hoped that this international judicial endorsement of Kosovo's independence helps to consolidate peace and reconciliation in the Balkans".

Azpiazu congratulates BBK on the CajaSur takeover as it will give the bank “more clout” to operate in the world of finances
The EAJ-PNV spokesperson for economic affairs at the Congress, Pedro Azpiazu, congratulated BBK and its Chairman, Mario Fernández, on the operation that enable the Bizkaia bank to take over CajaSur. He stressed that this would "consolidate the bank and give it more clout" to operate in the world of finance.

The Basque economy is facing the challenge of heading the most advanced regions
A report by La Caixa, the savings bank of Catalonia, stressed that the Basque Autonomous Community should build on its strengths to continue improving. "The challenge facing the Basque economy is to build on its strengths to head the most advanced European regions, of which it is already a member". The economic experts commissioned by La Caixa to submit a strategic analysis of the Basque Country stressed that "the risk of stagnation has to be avoided by fostering the most positive factors of our economy, such as clusters and niches of excellence".

A delegation from the Basque National Party (EAJ-PNV) will visit Boise on July 28 on the occasion of Jaialdi 2010, a celebration that is expected to bring together in Idaho many of the Basques living in the USA.

Working alone for the diaspora
A year after Patxi López took over the premiership, Basques from the diaspora who are concerned about their personal circumstances or who need to make consultations continue to contact the Basque National Party (EAJ-PNV) rather than the Basque Government Foreign Affairs Directorate. We in the Basque National Party are among the few political parties sensitive to their needs, as demonstrated in our day-to-day work as we pass on consultations and initiatives to wherever is relevant. The lack of concern for foreign affairs shown by the Socialists and the inaction of the current Basque government in this field are growing ever greater, leading to questions which for the moment remain unanswered: why this particular map of delegations? Are the delegates sent really suitable? Why do they not defend the internationalisation of Basque industry and trade and seek to open up the rest of our industrial fabric to the international stage?

The Chairman of the EAJ-PNV EBB (Basque National Party National Council), Iñigo Urkull, stressed this afternoon during the demonstration against the ruling of the Constitutional Court which stripped bare the Estatut (Catalan Statute of Autonomy) that "has driven us to express our solidarity with Catalonia, with the Catalan people: Its struggle for its national reality to be respected and for its self-government is a matter that also affects the Basque Country.
