Xala wins bare-hand pelota final at Bizkaia court in Bilbao

Left-handed, Iparralde-born Yves Sallaberry, nicknamed “Xala”, is the new number one of bare-hand pelota after his exciting victory in the final, held at the Bizkaia court in Bilbao. He has thus rounded off the first half of the year as the champion in singles and runner-up in doubles. Second place in the overall ranking goes to Aimar Olaizola.

Report by BBVA reveals that Basque economy shows less imbalance that that of Spain as a whole

The unemployment rate in the Basque Country will not fall until the growth rate of the economy tops 1.7%. This is not expected to occur until next year, when growth if forecast to be around 2% according to the first issue of the Situación País Vasco economic report drawn up by BBVA.

Urkullu: “The new Kutxa is going to be a key driving force for the Basque Country”

The EAJ-BNP EBB Chairman, Iñigo Urkullu, pointed out that the approval of the merger of the three savings banks by the BBK, Kutxa and Vital Boards means that “the new Kutxa is going to be a key driving force for the Basque Country, an economic motor that will support business activity, an industrial motor as it is committed to the Basque industrial sector and a social motor given the emphasis on helping through social works”.

Donostia to be European Capital of Culture in 2016

Donostia has been selected to be European Capital of Culture in 2016, an honour that It will share with the Polish city of Wroclaw. The shortlisted cities ruled out in the final stage were Burgos, Cordoba, Las Palmas, Segovia and Zaragoza.

The "Salamanca Papers" belonging to EAJ-BNP are now back in the Basque Country

EAJ-BNP‘s private papers seized during the Spanish Civil War and stored since then in Salamanca are now back in the Basque Country. A van laden with bundles of EAJ-BNP‘s private papers delivered them to the Basque Government, which in this case will now act as an intermediary in restoring them to their rightful owners.

Esteban: “The forthcoming Law on the Reina Sofía Museum should be able to permit the relocation, at least on a temporary basis, of Picasso‘s Guernica to the Basque Country”

The EAJ-BNP Basque Group has filed two amendments to the text of the “Draft law regulating the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía”. The Basque spokesperson for culture, Aitor Esteban, has explained that the first of these amendments “has been submitted in conjunction with ERC (Catalan left-wing party), so that the future Law on the Reina Sofía Museum will provide for the relocation of Picasso‘s Guernica to the Basque Country”. Specifically, he has stated, “we are calling for the subscription within one year at the most of whatsoever agreements are required between the Spanish and Basque governments to permit the definitive relocation of this painting, or at least its temporary transfer”.

EAJ-BNP takes control of 93 councils in the BAC

The Basque National Party has taken control of 93 councils in the Basque Autonomous Community. The national party already held the absolute majority in 58 towns and cities, including Bilbao, and negotiated control in the setting up of the councils of a further 35 municipalities, where it held the relative majority, some of which are as important as Getxo, Basauri, Sestao, Galdako, Leioa or Durango.

We are therefore calling on the news organisation that published the story to release the document where the BNP allegedly made such a proposal to the PSE.

Urkullu: “Each Party needs to get across its specific proposals for each of the provinces"

During a press conference at Sabin Etxea, the EAJ-BNP Chairman, Iñigo Urkulla, stressed that during the electoral campaign “EAJ-BNP based its discourse to society on three commitments. First, specific programme, proposals and projects. We unveiled a programme and we undertook to defend it from all institutions. Second, open agreements for a new era. The closed agreements, fractions and alliances are part of the past that we have to leave behind. We have undertaken not to form negative alliances and to avoid the policy of fractions. And thirdly, the priority of Basque society is getting the economy back on track and employment. We have stressed our know-how to deal with society's main concern. Our commitment is for all institutions to work together to develop the measures to trigger the economic recovery and job generation".

EAJ-BNP attains the transfer of the Labour Inspectorate and a further four competences to the Basque Country that worth 31 million

The bilateral commission of Zapatero‘s Government and the EAJ-BNP have finalised the details of the transfer to the Basque Country of five competences agreed on 26 January. These competences include the Labour Inspectorate and are valued at over 31 million euros. The transfer will mean that 376 public sector workers will be under the autonomous administration.

The European Commission gives the go-ahead to “kokotxa” imports

The European Commissioner for Fisheries, María Damanaki, has announced that community authorities will no longer require catch certificates from the importers that bring in kokotxas (hake cheeks) purchased abroad to meet the Basque demand for this part of the fish.
