The Gescrap Bizkaia Bilbao basketball team have reached the Top 16. The draw in Barcelona has placed them in the same group as Real Madrid, Unicaja from Malaga and Montepaschi from Siena.

5th Congress of Basque Centres
The Fifth World Congress of Basque Centres Abroad was held in Donostia-San Sebastián on November 2-4, 2011. The event was attended by representatives of 178 Basque centres from 24 countries on four continents: Europe, America, Asia and Oceania. The Congress analysed the situation of Basques living abroad and discussed their needs and demands.

Iker Martínez & Xabi Fernández selected as World Sailors of the Year 2011 by ISAF
Basque duo Iker Martínez and Xabi Fernández, the reigning world champions in 49er class and twice-winners of Olympic medals, have been selected by the ISAF as World Sailors of the Year 2011.

Football: Basque Country vs. Tunisia
In a Christmas friendly match, Tunisia cut short the Basque Country’s run of six straight wins dating back to their victory over Catalonia in 2007. Sami Trabelsi’s Tunisian team did not outplay the Basque Country team, coached by José Mari Amorrortu and Mikel Etxarri, but they managed to put away both the scoring chances that came their way in the second half.

Olaizola II crowned Cuatro y Medio pelota champion for 5th time
Aimar Olaizola beat Irujo by 22 points to 12 in a final that he ended up by dominating clearly after a hotly-disputed first half. He has now won all five of the finals that he has reached, making him the best player ever in the Cuatro y Medio form of the game.

22 months of steady growth in tourism in the Basque Country
Tourism in the Basque Country has been growing steadily for 22 months. Data from the Basque Statistics Office (Eustat) indicate that hospitality industry establishments registered 209,472 visitors, 24,462 more than in April 2010. The biggest increase was 23% in Bizkaia, followed by 10% in Araba and 5% in Gipuzkoa. The number of overnight stays was up 17% on the previous year at 387,204.

75th anniversary of the University of the Basque Country, the region’s first publicly-run university
Public university studies in the Basque Country began in the autumn of 1936 with the opening of Universidad Vasca-Euzko Irakastola Nagusia. The current University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) has organised a number of events to commemorate the 75th anniversary of that date. An itinerant exhibition under the title Heredamos un sueño - Universidad Vasca-Euzko Irakastola Nagusia 1936 [“The Dream that we Inherited -- Universidad Vasca-Euzko Irakastola Nagusia 1936”], numerous lectures and a formal anniversary celebration on December 1 to commemorate this, the embryo of what is now the UPV/EHU.

125th anniversary of Deusto University
Deusto, the doyen of Basque universities, was founded 125 years ago. To celebrate this anniversary the university organised a wide-ranging programme of activities including an exhibition under the title “Deusto, 125 Years” and the publication of the book La Universidad de Deusto entre dos siglos [“Deusto University, Straddling Two Centuries”] by María-Jesús Cava, who occupies the Chair of Contemporary History. The Rector, Jaime Oraá, has stated that these activities were organised “with an eye to the past, but also an eye to the future”.

Bilbao named European City of Sport 2012
Bilbao has joined the list of the eight European cities that are honoured by ACES Europe each year and which will be led this year by Istanbul as the European Capital of Sport 2012.
