Aberri Eguna
On April 8 the Basque National Party (EAJ-BNP) will be celebrating the 80th anniversary of its first Aberri Eguna at the Plaza Nueva square in Bilbao. ETA‘s announcement of a permanent cessation of its operations makes this the first Aberri Eguna to be held in peace since the restoration of democracy.

EAJ-BNP declares itself against labour reforms but does not support general strike called for March 29
The Basque National Party (EAJ-BNP) has clearly expressed its position in various forums as against the labour reform that Mariano Rajoy‘s government is seeking to introduce. We are against the reform because we believe that it will only harm workers, whose rights will be reduced in such important areas as dismissal, employment contracts and other issues on which trade unions, workers and political parties have achieved gains in recent years. The Basque Group in the lower house of the Spanish parliament plans to submit 58 amendments to this legislative decree in an attempt to improve the reform so that the workers are not the only ones left worse off.

EAJ-BNP thanks Idaho for declaration supporting consolidation of peace process
The Basque National Party (EAJ-BNP) wishes to thank the House of Representatives of the State of Idaho (USA) for its declaration approved unanimously on this date supporting the consolidation of the peace process in the Basque Country. EAJ-BNP trusts that the declaration will also be ratified by the State Senate in the next few days.

Provincial Council Organises Trade Mission to Chile with 33 SMEs & Universities in Bizkaia
The Provincial Council of Bizkaia and the Chamber of Commerce of Bilbao organised a trade mission to Chile on March 12-15 with the participation of 33 SMEs from various sectors, the University of the Basque Country and the University of Deusto.

The Spanish Royal Academy pays tribute to the Basque Language for the first time in its 300 years
“Basque is not a wall, but rather a bridge”. This was the message of the Director of the Etxepare Institute, Aizpea Goenaga, when she addressed the Plenary Session of the Spanish Royal Academy (RAE) that paid tribute to the Basque Language for the first time in its 300 year history.

Izaskun Bilbao in Strasbourg calls on ETA to disband and for greater consensus to achieve greater European support for the peace process
The EAJ-PNV Euro-MP, Izaskun Bilbao, has argued in Strasbourg that "ETA must disband and more consensus is needed between the parties when tackling the process to lead to the end of violence once and for all" for greater supporter for the peace process in Europe.

Hiriko Electric Car Presented in Brussels
At a large-scale event to mark the launching of the first prototype of the Hiriko electric car in Brussels European Commission President Jose Manuel Durao Barroso has assured that the vehicle, promoted by a consortium of Basque companies, is an example of the type of social innovation project that European needs to develop if it is to emerge from the economic crisis and that it fits perfectly into the EU‘s three-fold objective of fostering “smart, sustainable, inclusive growth”.

Meeting of the new National Executive Council
The first meeting of the new National Executive Council has taken place at party headquarters under the chairmanship of Iñigo Urkullu, who was elected Chairman on Saturday January 14, at the 6th General Assembly of the Basque National Party, held at the Bilbao Exhibition Centre. The new council is made up of Iñigo Urkullu, Jose Angel Agirrebengoa, Iñaki Gerenabarrena, Txaro Goikolea, Andoni Ortuzar, Joseba Egibar, Joseba Aurrekoetxea, Iñaki Goikoetxeta, Aitor Olaizola, Nekane Alonso, Lorea Bilbao, Pili García de Salazar, Koldo Mediavilla and Gonzalo Saenz de Samaniego.

Basque climbers Iñurrategi, Vallejo & Zabalza return to Bilbao after crossing Antarctic
Basque climbers Alberto Iñurrategi, Juan Vallejo and Mikel Zabalza are back in the Basque Country after crossing the Antarctic from sea to sea via the South Pole. After the 30 hour flight from Punta Arenas (Chile), Iñurrategi expressed his satisfaction and admitted that "the toughest part was the strain" that they had been under day after day.
