Declaration by the EBB on International Basque Language Day

In its day to day workings, Basque society clearly shows its firm determination to continue revitalising the Basque language. For instance the people who have decided to learn Basque are numbered in the thousands. Most parents – and the number continues to increase – choose to have their children educated in Basque, even in cases when they themselves do not speak the language. There are more than more people who speak Basque. We are building an increasingly bilingual society. Basque makes us visible and audible in more and more contexts. Basque is increasingly a living language, and one that is more and more useful in everyday life.

Ortuzar stated that frontiers were “among the greatest anachronisms within the EU, an obstacle to development and growth that is all the more absurd and painful when they are raised across a single people, as is the case with the Basques”.

We must convince our citizens: states are no longer the only entities in European history

In a seminar entitled “European Elections and Citizenship” organised by Sabino Arana Fundazioa and the Institute of European Democrats, Andoni Ortuzar, Chairman of the Euzkadi Buru Batzar of the Basque National Party urged his audience to “convince” citizens that “states are no longer the only entities in European history. Their power and their leading role are being inexorably dilutive in the face of the demands of pervasive globalisation and calls for self-government by cultural nations and regions. We need more Europe and a better Europe to tackle present and future challenges and ensure a future in peace, justice and freedom for our citizens. We do not need more Europe in the sense of interventions in tasks which the principle of subsidiarity dictates should be allocated to institutions closer to citizens”.
