As regards the presidential and parliamentary elections held in the Republic of Nicaragua on Sunday 7 November, without the presence of international observers, the Central Committee -the Euzkadi Buru Batzar- of the Basque National Party (EAJ-PNV) formulates the following considerations:

1. The EBB condemns the climate of social intimidation due to the arbitrary detention of dozens of political and social activists, the unwarranted attacks on the opposition, the arrest of several potential candidates, and the lack of electoral safeguards provided by the supreme electoral committee -Consejo Supremo Electoral- which has proceeded simply as an instrument of the Government, overseeing an apparent polling process that may be described as unquestionably farcical.

2. The EBB supports the statements, declarations and press releases issued by the European Union (EU), the United Nations (UN), the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), the Organization of American States (OAS), and other prestigious multilateral organisations that have denounced the anti-democratic nature of the elections that disqualify the authoritarian government presided over by Daniel Ortega and vice-president Rosario Murillo.

3. The EBB warns that the sham elections held in Nicaragua, in a country and region where ever greater issues of poverty, inequality and corruption are increasing political instability, are undermining democracy, threatening social harmony, causing thousands of people to flee the country, and supporting the consolidation of these kinds of deplorable dictatorships that are strangling Nicaragua and other nations on the continent.

4. The EBB deems it of vital importance to institute a civil society that is active, vigilant and engaged with democratic principles and coexistence for impeding the erstwhile liberating Sandinista force - Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) – to ultimately succumb to the allure of power and irreversibly install its current state of tyranny.
