There is still a year to go before Athletic Club de Bilbao’s San Mamés football stadium hosts the finals of the two biggest club competitions in European rugby. “The Cathedral” will be the setting for the finals of the Champions Cup and Challenge Cup on 11 and 12 May 2018, but the mud and the oval ball are already beginning to make their presence felt at the stadium. The official presentation of the trophies and the logo under which the event is to be promoted has now taken place, and the city’s mayor Juan Mari Aburto has said that the finals will turn Bilbao into “the great European capital of rugby”.
