Iparralde constitutes its first own institutional structure

The Mayor of Bayonne, Jean René Etchegaray, has been appointed the first President of the Municipal Community of Iparralde, the new institution of the northern Basque Country. Etchegaray, who has spent years calling for the creation of a Basque institution, got 73.4% of the votes. During the inauguration, the first President of the Community proposed by the French Government explained that Iparralde is entering a transition phase and that the work has only just begun.

Etchegaray and Lehendakari Urkullu meet to launch a phase of collaboration

Etchegary and Urkullu staged a historical event that made clear the spirit of collaboration that both are aiming for. Despite the fact that they do not have the same level of competence, Etchegaray believes that the time has come for hitherto unseen closer collaboration. "Identity must be the driver of development" he said.
