Iberdrola becomes the largest European power company after the German nuclear power shutdown
The list of Europe's major power companies by market capitalisation has changed radically in the last ten years, a change that has led to Iberdrola taking the top spot and that has substantially reduced the value on the stock exchange of such giants as France's EDF and, above all, the German company E.ON.
The "nuclear blackout" decreed in 2011 by the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, after the accident at the Japanese Fukushima power plant - which provided for the closure of all of the plants before 2022 - has been a hard blow to German power companies and has punished companies in other countries with nuclear assets, such as EDF.
At the other extreme, "diversification" and "stability" have converted Iberdrola into the largest European power company in terms of market capitalisation.
