The French Senate rejects the recognition of minority languages

The French Senate stopped the constitutional recognition of minority languages, such as Basque for example, which requires a majority in the two houses to be recorded in the Magna Carta.

A few weeks after the regional elections, the conservative majority in the upper house rejected the inclusion in the Constitution of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, as approved by the members.

It did so by raising a question beforehand to the Executive on the text put to the vote, which in practice means its rejection.

The French president, François Hollande, had been committed during the election campaign to introducing the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages into the Constitution. During the term of the previous president, Nicolas Sarkozy, Basque, Corsican and Breton were recognised as "heritage of France". The European Charter obliges signatory States to recognise these other languages as cultural expressions, which could have implications on educational, judicial and administrative issues.
