Basque Country plays Catalonia in centenary match

The Basque and Catalan football teams ended the year with a match at the new San Mamés stadium in Bilbao, which opened just a year ago. This match marked the centenary of the first match between these two teams on 3 January 1915, which took place at the old San Mamés, which also stood for a century before being demolished.

Over the years the two sides have met 11 times. The stadium was almost full (around 40,000 spectators) for an event in which there were calls for the two teams to be given official status. The match was chaired from the directors’ box by Basque Premier Iñigo Urkullu and Artur Mas, Premier of the Catalan Parliament.
