We must convince our citizens: states are no longer the only entities in European history
In a seminar entitled “European Elections and Citizenship” organised by Sabino Arana Fundazioa and the Institute of European Democrats, Andoni Ortuzar, Chairman of the Euzkadi Buru Batzar of the Basque National Party urged his audience to “convince” citizens that “states are no longer the only entities in European history. Their power and their leading role are being inexorably dilutive in the face of the demands of pervasive globalisation and calls for self-government by cultural nations and regions. We need more Europe and a better Europe to tackle present and future challenges and ensure a future in peace, justice and freedom for our citizens. We do not need more Europe in the sense of interventions in tasks which the principle of subsidiarity dictates should be allocated to institutions closer to citizens”.
Addressing an audience of almost 40 experts in the field including Euro MPs, university professors, politicians and lawyers, Mr Ortuzar stated that “Europe has been unable to provide natural shelter for citizens battered by globalisation. Indeed, many people have turned their backs on Europe and sought refuge in the nostalgia of a safer, closer, more traditional setting, mistrusting solutions and powers that come from Europe and seeing them as foreign, opaque and uncontrollable”.
