A robot designed in Euskadi administrates chemotherapy with absolute precision and safety

A company belonging to the Mondragon group, in collaboration with the Onkologikoa Hospital in San Sebastián, has designed an android capable of administering chemotherapy treatment with the greatest possible “precision, safety and traceability”. Until now the market offered other similar equipment, but the Gipuzkoa robot, christened “Kiro Oncology”, incorporates “substantial improvements”. The main one is that it “completely ensures that the chemotherapy administration process is fully controlled and makes no mistakes”.

Chemotherapy, the therapeutic arsenal which is used to fight tumours, is made up of thirty very powerful drugs which have to be correctly administered according to the needs of each patient. Each cancer is different and each treatment, as the director of Onkologikoa explains, requires “very complex” formulas with high toxicity levels. “Kiro Onkology”, the result of two years' development, will contribute to this work, which will be supervised by the hospital's pharmaceutical staff.
