Statement by Andoni Ortuzar, President of the EBB, following the announcement of the International Verification Commission
Following the announcement made on 21 February by the International Verification Commission, Andoni Ortuzar, president of the Euskadi Buru Batzar of EAJ-PNV, has issued this statement:
- The PNV wishes to make public its approval of the work carried out in recent months by the International Verification Commission. We support and endorse this institution and the people who form part of it. We will continue to support and endorse it with the same determination with which we will back all the groups, institutions and organizations working for the definitive consolidation of peace in Euskadi and a future without violence for us, our children and our grandchildren. The PNV therefore stands behind the International Verification Commission and encourages it to continue working for peace.
- The step taken by ETA is an initial, positive, step in the right direction. A step taken unilaterally and unconditionally. But it is no more than that. A step. An initial step towards its definitive disarmament and, as such, insufficient in itself. It is also a shorter and less decisive step than we would have wished. The PNV hopes that this step will be followed, at the earliest opportunity, by longer and firmer steps leading as soon as possible to the complete and definitive disarmament of ETA.
- The PNV demands that ETA does not play games with time or dramatisations, that it does not apply paces or criteria to its disarmament which respond to particular interests and that it makes use of the time it has been granted to complete its disarmament to take the greatest step: the recognition of the unjust harm it has caused. In short, the PNV demands that ETA listens to the clamour of the Basque people and ends, once and for all, this sad chapter of violence in Euskadi.
