New impetus for the protection of minority languages in Europe
The co-chairs of the Intergroup for Minorities of the European Parliament, François Alfonsi (from the Greens-EFA Group) and Csaba Sándor Tabajdi (from the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament), have presented the “Report on endangered European languages and linguistic diversity in the European Union” in Bilbao at a meeting organized by the Euskaltzaindia (Royal Academy of the Basque Language) and the Sabino Arana Foundation. It was approved by a large majority in the European Parliament on 11 September 2013.
In addition to the two co-chairs of the Intergroup for Minorities of the European Parliament, the meeting was also attended by Izaskun Bilbao, MEP for the EAJ-PNV, Ramón Tremosa, MEP for CiU, Patxi Baztarrika. the Deputy Minister for Linguistic Policy of the Basque Government, as well as other MEPs and representatives of the Basque Government, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and bodies and associations working in the field of Euskara and Basque education and culture.
