Anne Etchegoyen has a hit singing in Basque

Anne Etchegoyen, whose mother was born in a village in the Baztán Valley in Navarre, has caused great excitement with her songs in recent months. She joined a children‘s choir at the age of 8 and now, 25 years later, her crystal-clear voice has given her a hit in Paris with Hegoak, her version of Txoria Txori by Mikel Laboa (1934-2008), surely one of the most beautiful songs ever sung. Anne was born in Saint-Palais, and has had hits singing in Spanish, French and Basque.

Her latest album, Les Voix Basques (“Basque Voices”), from which the catchy single Hegoak is taken, has earned her a gold record inFrance, with sales in excess of 60,000 copies. This is an enormous number for a collection of songs in Basque, a language spoken by only a very small percentage of the French population of 65 million. The CD is one of the top 10 best sellers of 2013, and has topped charts drawn up by such influential media organisations as national TV channelFrance2.
