Urkullu: “Anyone who seeks to wipe clean the slate of our historical rights will find us standing against them”
In a speech on the Feast of St. Ignatius, Iñigo Urkullu, Chair of the Governing Council of the Basque National Party and the party‘s candidate for Basque Premier, stated that the Spanish government is “out for the count just seven months after being elected. It is a government with no road map, no vision and no overall strategy. A Spanish government that is hiding behind its absolute majority, obsessed with the most outdated centralism, imposing its ideas by legislative decree, failing to enter into dialogue or to seek consensus or agreement”.

“A Spanish government involved in underhand scheming with the electoral roll. But they’re not going to fool Basque society. We all know that anyone who wishes to live and vote in Euskadi can now do so without threats, with total freedom and with full institutional and political support. We want to give the Spanish government a serious warning: a rigged election would be an error of historical proportions. But that is precisely what they are planning”.
Mr. Urkullu stated that he wished to make it clear that “in these few months since the new Spanish government was formed we have witnessed the most alarming signs of reversals of recent times in the process of devolution. We have “basic legislation” that ignores the specific areas of authority of the Historical Autonomous Communities; unilateral decisions that break away from the structure of the Economic Agreement and with bilateralism; exceptional projects that seek to adulterate the legitimate will of Basque society; latent threats of further measures with the excuse of ensuring the general order of the economy that actually seek to make all regulations subordinate to the guardianship and mandate of the state”.
