Partenope honours Bilbao for its extraordinary urban redevelopment

Partenope, or Parthenope in English, is the name of the first city that stood on the site now occupied by Naples, and for the last four years it is also the name of a virtual city, created by Neapolitans, with the aim of changing the city’s image, encouraging and promoting civic behaviour amongst its citizens.

Founded on the internet by a group of Neapolitans who, tired of seeing their city known throughout the world solely for its negative aspects, decided to create a focal point for reinforcing civility, commitment and the energy of the silent majority of Neapolitans who work, live, strive and fulfil their duties as citizens.

This virtual city was founded in 2008 and since then it celebrates its birthday with a prize-giving event. On 20 June, it marked its first four years and awarded two prizes; one to the major of Turin, Piero Fassino, and the other, a special one, to Bilbao:

“For the extraordinary urban redevelopment undertaken over the past 20 years that has made the case of this Basque city one of those most studied and imitated in recent decades”
