The Basque National Party appeals to Europe over the Popular Party‘s decision to modify the Basque census
The Basque National Party has appealed to the European Commission (EC) over the reform announced by the PP to modify the Basque census to include those people who left the Basque Country due to the threat posed by ETA. The National Party‘s EMP, Ms Izaskun Bilbao, has asked Europe‘s governing body whether the initiative is consistent with the "European Union‘s democratic standards".
The measure, if and when implemented, would raise many doubts about its legal enforcement, as the measure might be in breach of the principle of equal voting rights. Specifically, Ms Bilbao refers to this matter by indicating that the aim of the government presided by Mariano Rajoy is based "on a concept that is impossible to objectify and will lead to some voters having double voting rights, a situation that has never occurred before within the European legal system".
Accordingly, the nationalist EMP has called upon the EU authorities to issue a statement on this matter, as in her opinion the reform proposed by the Popular Party "is based on a concept, namely, those people who have left the Basque Country due to terrorist pressure, that is impossible to verify from a material perspective, and therefore from a legal one".
