Azkuna short-listed for the World Mayor 2012 award

Iñaki Azkuna may become the world’s best mayor, and that’s not just another example of Bilbao’s famous habit of boasting. He is on the short-list of 25 finalists – seven are from Europe – to become World Mayor 2012 after being selected from around a hundred candidates. The polls will be open until October and the winner will be announced in December. The European contenders include the mayor of Florence, Matteo Renzi; Freddy Thielemans, from Brussels, and Ahmed Aboutaleb, from Rotterdam; but there are rivals from countries all over the world, including Peru, Chile, Canada, Turkey, Indonesia and Nigeria.

Since 2000, Bilbaohas received numerous awards that have acknowledged its transformation, cleanliness, transparency, architecture and management. In 2011, Azkuna was made an Officier (Officer) of theFrenchRepublic’s Legion of Honour, the highest honour bestowed by the French government, in recognition of his work on cultural exchange. The challenge now is even more ambitious.

Although the name of the world’s best mayor will not be released until December, simply being among the 25 finalists is already an honour in itself. There were initially 100 candidates entering the competition, but the organisers of this award have now short-listed 25 finalists.
