Urkullu: “The key lies in our will to use the Basque language”

At the festival in favour of the Basque language, Araba Euskeraz, which has been held in Labastida, the chairman of the Basque National Party’s Central Committee (EBB), Iñigo Urkullu, has stated that the Basque language, euskera, is our treasure and society needs to consider it as such. Urkullu has stressed that euskera is a jewel for the whole of society, not only for those that speak it. “People need to realise that euskera is a valuable possession”.

According to the burukide abertzale, the nationalist leader, we have to make euskera our own, we have to feel it is part of us and appreciate it, announcing it to the four corners of the earth, for if we do not, no one else will. “We need to generate interest, arousing enthusiasm and a will to learn euskera among those people who do not speak it. Our aim is to achieve a modern and plurilingual Basque society, and our pledge is to base our knowledge of several languages on euskera” he added.

In Urkullu’s opinion, we should pay special attention to the task of creating a greater range of informal settings for children and young people, enabling them to use the areas provided to reinforce and complement the level attained at school. “This means the work and influence of Basque schools, ikastolas, and the entire school system are crucial to the effort made to create a society that is increasingly bilingual”.

To conclude, the chairman of the EBB has stressed that today’s initiative is not an isolated event. Junehas also seen the sponsored walk, Ibilaldia, in Trapaga, the 21st edition of the festival for Basque State Education in Zarautz, and today we have had the opportunity to take part in this Araba Euskaraz in Labastida. “It is common knowledge that Basque society is clearly in favour of a school system based on quality and the Basque language. A commitment to euskera. We have managed to create a society that is increasingly bilingual”. “Here today, I should like to express my admiration and thanks to the people that make up the education community. I should like to urge young people to feel proud and live their lives in euskera. The key lies in our will to use the Basque language. It’s in our hands!”
