Urkullu: “To change the world you must start with yourself”

This morning the Basque National Party (EAJ-BNP) held an open day to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the opening of its Sabin Etxea headquarters in Bilbao. It was in 1992 that the new Party headquarters came into service: Sabin Etxea stands on a site formerly occupied by the house where Sabino Arana, founder of Basque nationalism, was born. EAJ-BNP took advantage of the celebration to present its new brand logo. In the words of Iñigo Urkullu, Chairman of the Governing Council (EBB) “the Basque National Party welcomes this new era with three commitments: openness, heart and agreement”.

“A new era marked by openness: yesterday the National Assembly heard the EBB’s action plan for the next four years. We have sought to stress the objective of opening up to society. Today we open our doors to reach out freely. This is a symbol of a party that prioritises close links with society, direct knowledge of social concerns and needs and engagement. Being on the same page as ordinary citizens is our goal and our raison d’être”.

Mr. Urkullu went on to say that we are “in a new era with a heart. Yesterday we unveiled out new logo. This is the centre, the heart of the Basque National Party. We seek to get close to the heart of individuals from our very essence. We live in a new era marked deeply by the economic crisis. We wish to give society the message that we are aware of the difficulties, we are close by, we feel the suffering of society in the crisis. We seek with all our heart to win the hearts of people.

All our experience, our know-how, our commitment, is placed at the service of the needs and aspirations of this people. A people that is also reflected in the new logo”.

He ended by stressing that we were now in “a new time of agreement: Euskadi faces a new future. We look back at the past and we see war, bombs, dictatorship, terrorism, hate and bitterness. And in spite of it all, we see a Basque Country that has equipped itself with public institutions, recovered its identity and grown under self-government.

We see a nation under construction, albeit at different rates, a nation that is growing and wishes to continue doing so. Now we turn our gaze to the future. Our priority is to lead this new cycle. To promote a new political status. To achieve a constituent agreement that can provide the foundations for a new future of harmony, progress and development for Euskadi”.
