Vitoria-Gasteiz selected as European Green Capital 2012

At a conference in Stockholm, the European Commission has selected the city of Gasteiz as European Green Capital 2012.

The annual European Green Capital award is an initiative that seeks to recognise the commitment of cities that work for the environment and present them as role models for environmentally-friendly urban living.

The French city ofNanteswas awarded the title for 2013, butBarcelona(Spain), Malmö (Sweden),Nuremberg(Germany) andReykjavik(Iceland) failed to win.

Vitoriawill be handed the mantle of Green Capital by the German city ofHamburg, which is to take it up in January from the first holder,Stockholm(Sweden).
