We are committed to achieving an egalitarian society in which men and women are recognised and valued as people on an equal footing in family, social, political, religious and labour-related matters. We support the balanced participation of women and men in the world of work, and to that end we call for balanced participation also in family life, and for services and resources to enable women to reconcile their personal and family lives successfully with work.

We acknowledge the efforts made to date by groups of women, and believe that there is still much to do before full equality is obtained, so we appeal in particular to young people: inequality often manifests itself most subtly among the young, who live in circumstances of apparent equality.

In the face of persistent inequality we advocate a strengthening of equality that can only be achieved by heightening awareness, shared responsibility and the joint participation of men and women in all social tasks, starting with care and attention in the home.

The current economic crisis is affecting women particularly harshly, often merely because they are women. Recent studies have concluded that men in the Basque Country may on average earn as much as 7000 euros more than women. This wage discrimination perpetuates inequality and may result in a return to outdated models that should be buried and forgotten.

At the EAJ-BNP we invite and encourage all citizens, men and women alike, to take an active role in the events organised by local authorities and associations to mark International Women’s Day.
