Iker Martínez & Xabi Fernández selected as World Sailors of the Year 2011 by ISAF
Basque duo Iker Martínez and Xabi Fernández, the reigning world champions in 49er class and twice-winners of Olympic medals, have been selected by the ISAF as World Sailors of the Year 2011.

It was third time lucky for the Basque duo, who finished second this year in their first Barcelona World Race, as they had been nominated twice before for this prestigious award.
The decision was announced at a ceremony at the impressive Cuartel de Bajalla venue in San Juan(Puerto Rico), though Iker and Xabi were on board the Telefónica at the time and heard the news not a solemn ceremony but out in the northAtlantic as they contested stage one of the Volvo Ocean Race.
