75th anniversary of the University of the Basque Country, the region’s first publicly-run university
Public university studies in the Basque Country began in the autumn of 1936 with the opening of Universidad Vasca-Euzko Irakastola Nagusia. The current University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) has organised a number of events to commemorate the 75th anniversary of that date. An itinerant exhibition under the title Heredamos un sueño - Universidad Vasca-Euzko Irakastola Nagusia 1936 [“The Dream that we Inherited -- Universidad Vasca-Euzko Irakastola Nagusia 1936”], numerous lectures and a formal anniversary celebration on December 1 to commemorate this, the embryo of what is now the UPV/EHU.
UPV/EHU Rector Iñaki Goirizelaia had this to say: "it is reassuring to know that our forebears were aware of the importance of providing university studies in Basque, of the decisive role of research, of the need for university education to be accessible to the people, of the importance of social action in a university that was for everyone. Today's University of the Basque Country, recognized as a Campus of International Excellence, certainly owes its origin to those ideas. Ours is a public, plurilingual university where the Basque language is used at all levels; a university for everyone that works on the basis of social responsibility and conducts research on the international stage".
