The "Salamanca Papers" belonging to EAJ-BNP are now back in the Basque Country
EAJ-BNP‘s private papers seized during the Spanish Civil War and stored since then in Salamanca are now back in the Basque Country. A van laden with bundles of EAJ-BNP‘s private papers delivered them to the Basque Government, which in this case will now act as an intermediary in restoring them to their rightful owners.
A decision reached by the archive’s trust, the Patronato del Archivo de Salamanca, dated 11 November 2010, ordered the return of these private papers containing information on meetings, assemblies, lists of party members, private correspondence, numerous EAJ-BNP reports, etc. in documents seized during the Spanish Civil War and until now stored in Salamanca. In spite of the trust’s decision, the return of the famous Basque nationalist "papers" had been blocked by several appeals lodged by the regional government, the Junta de Castilla y León, which opposed their return to the Basque Country, just as it did in the case of the Catalan "papers".
The return of these private papers was made possible by the Law of 17 November 2005 on the reinstatement to Catalonia of the documentation confiscated during the Civil War and held up until then in the Archive of Historical Memory, the Archivo de Memoria Histórica, which is located in Salamanca.
Its Additional Provision One caters for the return of documents, collections and papers not only to Catalonia but also to other individuals and private legal entities in the rest of Spain’s autonomous communities. EAJ-BNP has in fact been the only private agent to request the return of the private files that were received last night at the Basque government’s Heritage department, which will now be the one charged with returning the papers to the Basque National Party.
