Esteban: “The forthcoming Law on the Reina Sofía Museum should be able to permit the relocation, at least on a temporary basis, of Picasso‘s Guernica to the Basque Country”
The EAJ-BNP Basque Group has filed two amendments to the text of the “Draft law regulating the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía”. The Basque spokesperson for culture, Aitor Esteban, has explained that the first of these amendments “has been submitted in conjunction with ERC (Catalan left-wing party), so that the future Law on the Reina Sofía Museum will provide for the relocation of Picasso‘s Guernica to the Basque Country”. Specifically, he has stated, “we are calling for the subscription within one year at the most of whatsoever agreements are required between the Spanish and Basque governments to permit the definitive relocation of this painting, or at least its temporary transfer”.
In addition, Aitor Esteban has explained that “in the second amendment, presented solely by the EAJ-BNP Basque Group, our aim is that the guarantee the State provides for works of cultural interest should be extended to any museum in Spain in the event of important exhibitions”, that is, “when valued at more than 100,000 euros”. According to the Basque MP, as spokesperson for cultural affairs, “at the present time the Law provides guarantees only for those works of art in exhibitions that are held in a very limited number of institutions, all of which are headquartered in Madrid”, a situation he goes on to say “is not consistent with the aim of bringing major exhibitions to a much more widely distributed public away from the capital city”.
Finally, Aitor Esteban has stressed that “there are other museums outside Madrid that are perfectly capable of organising events of the highest calibre, but if they do not have the backing of the central government they are forced to relinquish them”.
