EAJ-BNP attains the transfer of the Labour Inspectorate and a further four competences to the Basque Country that worth 31 million

The bilateral commission of Zapatero‘s Government and the EAJ-BNP have finalised the details of the transfer to the Basque Country of five competences agreed on 26 January. These competences include the Labour Inspectorate and are valued at over 31 million euros. The transfer will mean that 376 public sector workers will be under the autonomous administration.

The competences transferred are the Labour Inspectorate, primary school teachers and health workers in penitentiary institutions, religion teachers and the validation and recognition of studies in foreign centres based in the Basque Country and of non-university foreign qualifications.

“It is a great step forward towards Basque self-government," claimed the spokesperson of the Basque Group, Josu Erkoreka, who challenged Patxi López's Government, which will have to approve it formally with the Spanish Central Government, to improve the contents of these transfer, although he believes “that would be difficult”:

From 8 June onwards, negotiations will be held regarding the transfer of a further two competences that EAJ-BNP considers to be particularly important and which would lead to a significant economic injection: the toll motorways – in this case, the AP-68 between the Basque Country and Aragón is still pending transfer -, along with the suburban railways.

Erkoreka has stressed that it is “optimistic” about this new phases of the negotiation as it has noted a “favourable attitude” by the Government representative on the bilateral commission. It therefore seems promising that by the end of the negotiation sessions, all the undertakings that were part of the agreement for the EAJ-BNP to back the current budgets will be finalised.
