Elections held in the French Basque Country (Ipar Euskal Herria) on 20 March

On 20 March this year, the first round of the cantonal elections was held in the French Basque Country for renewing the offices of councillors to the General Council of the Atlantic Pyrenees. The turnout has fallen in this region, to the same extent as it has throughout France.

In a statement made by the Basque Nationalist Party (EAJ-PNB) “this drop in turnout is a clear indication that the current approach to politics is in crisis”. Within this context, EAJ-BNP has presented candidates in all five cantons for the first time, thereby taking a step forward.

“The overall results obtained are a step forward. In total, 346 people have voted for EAJ-BNP’s candidates in the five cantons, and EAJ-PNB would like to thank all those voters who have placed their trust in our party”.

Pako Arizmendi, the candidate for Garazi, is the candidate who has polled the most votes: 204 votes, which is 5.75%. The rest of the results were as follows: Bayonne East, 42 votes, 1.52%; Iholdi, 32 votes, 1.17%; Biarritz- West 29 votes, 0.83%; and Bayonne North, 39 votes, 0.79%.

“These results show how important popular support is for each local candidate. The results obtained reinforce the fact that EAJ-BNP, both by itself and with the left-wing nationalists, has managed to convey a message in defence of the Basque language and nation” added EAJ-PNB’s delegates.
