Inauguration of the Miribilla pelota stadium, the largest in the Basque Country

Bilbao and Bizkaia are now enjoying their new pelota stadium, or fronton. They are graced with a facility that has been a long time coming in the province. So now they have a modern venue that has paid back a long-standing debt with this area of just over 1.2 million people. The opening did not involve the usual cutting of the ribbon, a typical snapshot of almost all inauguration ceremonies: as was only befitting, the christening of the massive Bizkaia stadium, with seating for 3,000 people making it the largest in the Basque Country, was celebrated with a ceremonial service struck by one of the greatest champions this country has ever seen.

Jesús García Ariño, the winner of two berets, txapelas, as champion hand pelota player (Manomanista), enjoyed the proud moment of hitting the first ball against the black front-wall in this new home for enthusiasts of this sport. The service was returned by Iñaki Gorostiza, another of the province’s famous champions. Then, under the watchful eye of Hilario Azkarate, the champion of champions, with six singles titles, both José Luis Bilbao and Iñaki Azkuna were brave enough to emulate these great figures using equipment that was then autographed and kept as a memento of this magical moment.

“This new fronton will ensure that pelota gains in popularity and experiences a new golden era in Bizkaia”, affirmed Jose Luis Bilbao, the province’s Deputy General.
