EBB statement on the presentation of the Articles of incorporation of the new political formation of the Nationalist Left
EAJ-PNV attended, as an observer, the meeting called by LOKARRI in order to present the new political formation representing the nationalist left. We are likewise appraised of the documents upon which the political and organisational project of new formation is based and which explain its principles and commitments. These Articles will be submitted for registration with the Ministry of the Interior Political Parties Registry this very week.
With this in mind, after thorough analysis of said documentation on which the speeches by Iñigo Iruin and Rufi Etxebarria at the presentation were based, EBB wishes to make public the following statement:
One.- To welcome the initiative to constitute a new political party which entails a clear turning point with respect to the political and organisational positions which the nationalist left considered official has historically maintained. To welcome particularly warmly the rejection of the use of violence or the threat of its use to achieve political objectives, including the violence of ETA in any of its forms. EBB also believes that the self-government that the so-called nationalist left claims and proclaims constitutes a declaration of undoubted and undeniable transcendental value.
Two.- To emphasise that the principles and assumptions underlying the creation of the new political party mark a break with the past of the nationalist left and open the perspective of a new time of hope for Basque politics. A rupture which EAJ-PNV has repeatedly called for. In spite of the tardiness of the response to our demands and those of society in general - we have wasted many years to get to this point - we believe we can be congratulated.
Three.- That in line with the foregoing statements, inscription of the new party in the Political Parties registry of the Ministry of the Interior, if the Articles which, for the moment we are ignorant, confirm the founding principles announced and meet all provisions required in the applicable legislation, should be accepted and placed on record.
Four.- We demand that the Spanish Government proceed to register the new party in due time and form. The Government should act in a statesmanlike way and not cede to the pressure of those who, for spurious reasons, oppose legalisation of the new formation openly or covertly, prejudging intentions and with surreptitious and merely electoral interests at heart. We believe that the Spanish Government should take advantage of the time offered by EAJ-PNV for stability without having recourse to the Courts when they know that the "nationalist left" will be present in the elections in one way or another.
Five.- To recognise, in particular, the willingness and desire of the promoters of the new party to contribute, with the other political, social and trade union stakeholders, to the final and complete disappearance of all kinds of violence, particularly that of ETA, to the peace, justice and reconciliation of Basque society and to recognition and compensation of all the victims. EAJ-PNV, which has always demanded that the historical nationalist left face up to its responsibilities, welcomes the change of position - towards what the remaining formations committed ourselves either from foundation or in the interests of the rules of the game - which these commitments entail, and is prepared to open a dialogue with the new party to define the measures tending to achievement of said objectives.
