EAJ-PNV says that cutting funding for the ikastolas is ´despicable´

The EAJ-PNV member of parliament, Garbiñe Mendizabal, considers  the Basque Government's cutting funding for the Iparralde ikastolas (schools where children are taught in Basque in the French Basque Country) to be "despicable" and has accused the  PP political party of being "behind this decision".

The EAJ-PNV MP pointed that previous Basque governments had allocated funding to those ikastolas "as it was not allowed under French legislation". She added that the Gernika Statute envisaged funding aimed at supporting and protecting the Basque Language, as is this case.

According to Mendizabal, the ikastolas are a "fundamental instrument to ensure knowledge and use of the Basque Language" and the Basque Government must continue to help those schools.  "We believe it is truly despicable that the funding is to be cut in this way over three years, a decision taken without any rationale," explained the Basque nationalist MP.

She stressed that this decision shows that Patxi López's Government "says one thing and does the opposite" and pointed out that the Basque ruling party had promised that there would be no changes relating to the Basque Language. Garbiñe Mendizabal also pointed out that "the PP political party" was behind this decision by the Basque Government.
