Izaskun Bilbao expects Citizens‘ Initiative to open door to Europe

15/12/2010

The Basque National Party (EAJ-PNV) expects the regulations approved this morning in Strasbourg on the implementation of the European Citizens' Initiative to "open the door to European institutions for people's concerns and provide an opportunity for the regions to overcome the shortfall in recognition from which they suffer in the current institutional structure of the European Union". This opinion was expressed by EAJ-PNV MEP Izaskun Bilbao during the debate on the Initiative in the European Parliament.

Ms. Bilbao, a former Speaker of the Basque Parliament, developed tools such as Zabalik and Parte Hartu during her mandate and was directly involved in numerous initiatives in favour of opening up public institutions. She stressed that these regulations "are a basic tool for managing the knowledge and talent available in society.  They will also oblige us to retrain, raise our profile as political leaders in virtual communities and the digital society, and exercise a closer, more human type of leadership".
