EAJ-PNV EBB statement regarding the situation in the Western Sahara
08/11/2010
Given the recent events in the occupied territories of the Western Sahara, EAJ-PNV wishes to raise the following points:
One.- We would like to express our most sincere solidarity with the families of the people killed during the indiscriminate attack by the Moroccan security forces. We hope for a quick recovery for the dozens of Sahrawis wounded in the attack by the Moroccan Government during their peaceful civil protest in the Agdaim Izik camp outside El-Aaiún.
Two.- We denounce the disproportionate use of force by the Moroccan police force in the El Aaium camp and the city of the same name. It is therefore obvious that the ban on Basque MPs and the media sought to prevent the details about the action taken by the Moroccan security forces reaching international public opinion.
Three.- We urge the Spanish government, due to its historical responsibilities assumed in the decolonisation process, to demand that the government of Mohamed VI cease armed hostilities against the Sahrawis. We likewise ask the Spanish government to take the necessary steps with the international community to condemn these events.
Four.- We should point out that these extremely serious events occurred on the thirty-fifth anniversary of the Moroccan occupation. They therefore took place on the very day scheduled for the start of the fifth round of talks between Morocco and the Polisario Front in Manhasset (New York), under the auspices of the United Nations and its special envoy, Christopher Ross. Therefore, we deem them to be an attempt to boycott or hamper a fair and peaceful solution for the dispute between Morocco and the Sahrawi People that dates back to the Moroccan occupation of the territories of the Western Sahara.
Five.- We advocate ongoing dialogue to find a way out of the current stalemate and which should be based on mutual respect and international law. In particular, emphasis should be placed on the resolutions of the United Nations that highlight the free determination of the Sahrawi People as the basic grounds for a lasting solution to the conflict.
