Gasteiz could be the European Green Capital

Gasteiz is among the six European cities on the shortlist for the 2012 and 2012 European Green Capital environmental award.  It will compete with Barcelona (Spain), Malmó (Sweden), Nantes (France), Nuremberg (Germany) and Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, a candidate country to join the EU. The winners will be announced at a ceremony to be held in Stockholm, the current Green Capital, at the end of October.

The Selection Committee began to examine the list of 17 candidate cities on 1 February and have produced their shortlist of these six finalists. The cities have been assessed using a comprehensive list of environmental criteria, including the local contribution to the fight against climate change, transport, urban green zones, sustainable land use, nature and biodiversity, the quality of the local atmosphere, noise; waste generation and management, water consumption, residual waste treatment and the environmental management of the municipality.
