EAJ-PNV in Boise
A delegation from the Basque National Party (EAJ-PNV) will visit Boise on July 28 on the occasion of Jaialdi 2010, a celebration that is expected to bring together in Idaho many of the Basques living in the USA.
The Basque National Party delegation is to be led by Iñaki Goikoetxeta (the party's head of international affairs) and by Basque Member of Parliament Andoni Ortuzar. The event will also be attended by José Luis Bilbao, the General Deputy for Bizkaia, who will be presenting the Bizkaitar argia award to illustrious Idaho Basque Pete Cenarrusa.
Pete T. Cenarrusa is a well-known personality among the people of Idaho. He was born on December 16, 1917, just 27 years after Idaho joined the Union as its 43rd State and just 24 years after Antonin Dvorak composed the New World Symphony.
Cenarrusa has had a major influence in getting the authorities in Idaho to adopt measures in support of democracy and self-government for the Basques, in co-operation with such other worthies as Paul Laxalt. Pete has acted as a guide and host for Basques in Idaho, and has always been willing to help while asking nothing in return. He has championed the Basques and acted as a patron for the preservation of their legacy.
José Luis Bilbao will attend several of the same public events as Basque Premier López in Boise.
Another Basque National Party delegation, headed by Iñaki Anasagasti, visited the Dominican Republic this month to take part in an event to mark the anniversary of the arrival there 71 years ago of the first refugees from the Spanish Civil War, many of them Basques. The delegation met with the country's leading political parties during the visit.
