Iñigo Urkullu: ´Aguirre’s legacy is the legacy of the agreement that EAJ-PNV is relaunching with ADOS”
The Chairman of the National Council (EBB) of the EAJ-PNV (Basque Nationalist Party), Iñigo Urkullu, attended the University of the Basque Country's Summer School where he gave a lecture entitled "Leading in 20th Century Politics" to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of the first Lehendakari or Basque Premier, José Antonio Aguirre. Urkullu said he was pleased to have the opportunity to respond to the invitation's question of "What makes History?", and answered that "Aguirre makes history".
The Chairman of the EAJ-PNV EBB stressed that people now coexist in new socio-economic areas. "Our goal is to bring our economic, social and political aspirations in line with this new scenario. This is the driving principle behind the ADOS project".
By applying the "Aguirre ideology", ADOS, he explained, is first and foremost a forward-looking programme. "EAJ-PNV implemented this proposal last February and our horizon is 2013. The Basque Country is in the throws of an institutional, political and economic crisis as the current Government's project is not in line with society. Our horizon is to provide a new forward-looking programme for the Basque Country, for the Basque Country overall. A programme that enables us to face the economic challenges, that today have an international dimension. And which also offers new political responses to the political aspirations of the Basque Country".
"We are living in a time of new centralism," said Urkullu, "whose latest expression has been the ruling of the Constitutional court regarding the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia". The Chairman of the PNV National Council went on to explain that the "Catalan route has been cut off. That also happened to the "Basque Route", when the Spanish Parliament refused to debate the draft New Political Statute approved by the Basque Parliament. We are witnessing an obvious intent to cut off the routes to a plural State. Cutting off the routes to a multi-lingual and multi-national situation which, in reality, exists in the State. We are its expression. And we are of legal age. This is the goal that we are striving for: to turn the Basque Country into a cutting-edge nation. This is the legacy of Aguirre, which is today more applicable than ever".
