EAJ-PNV brings the annual meeting of the ALDE Group of the European Parliament to the Basque Country
The ALDE Group (EUROPEAN LIBERALS AND DEMOCRATS), the third most numerous in the European Parliament, holder of the balance of power between the two ideological blocks in the European Parliament (Popular and Socialist Groups), will hold in Bilbao from 28 to 30 June the meeting it organizes each year outside Brussels. During the visit, organised by EAJ-PNV, the Group will analyse its strategy for the next half year on subjects as important as the economic governance of Europe, and will review the six months of the Spanish Presidency.
The Euro representative Izaskun Bilbao Barandica has managed to bring this event, which will gather together around 150 people who work in the European Parliament, to the Basque Country. In addition to the aforesaid matters, the Euro representatives will take advantage of the visit to become familiar with the model of support for the real economy deployed by Basque institutions since the beginning of autonomous government and some of the institutions prerogative of Basque self-government such as the Economic Agreement.
Bilbao, a member of this group, considers that it is "important that European institutions become aware of the Basque reality and of questions such as the Economic Agreement and that they see for themselves that the Basque Country has exceeded Spain in innovation, support for the real economy and in social policies".
The ALDE Group workshops will begin on Monday at midday with a working meeting aimed at setting the Group's strategy for the next half year under the Presidency of Belgium. The next day will have a full agenda of contacts directed towards awareness of the Basque reality. Amongst other activities the Euro-reps will visit the Guernica Council Building accompanied by its President Ana Madariaga, will receive an explanation of the Economic Agreement from the President of the Bizkaia Provincial Council José Luis Bilbao, and hold a meeting with representatives of the entire fishing sector to increase their knowledge of the reality of this industry.
The agenda also contains a visit to the Technology Park of Zamudío, to Petronor, to the Intelligence Centre for the automotive industry in Amorebieta and to the Guggenheim Museum or the Euskalduna Conference Centre and Concert Hall.
