Following the death of Orlando Zapata Tamayo
Following the death Cuban prisoner of conscience Orlando Zapata Tamayo, EAJ-PNV wishes to express:
1.- Its consternation at the death of opposition member Orlando Zapata Tamayo after 85 days on hunger strike. The Cuban government cannot elude its responsibility for this avoidable death. In this time of grief our condolence and solidarity go out first and foremost to the family of the deceased.
2.- Its condemnation of the repression of peaceful protests by Cuban citizens against the lack of political freedoms in the Republic of Cuba.
3.- Its demand that prisoners of conscience held under inhumane conditions for exercising their basic human rights of expression, association and assembly be set free.
4.- Its conviction that through dialogue and reconciliation among Cubans and firm support by the international community for a process of democratisation in Cuba the current difficulties can be overcome and the way can be prepared for a peaceful transition to a democratic regime respectful of public freedoms and human rights.
