Iberdrola and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia sign a protocol agreement in order to develop a power supply system for electric cars
The Provincial Council of Bizkaia and Iberdrola have signed a collaboration agreement in order to stimulate, from the headquarters of the Automotive Intelligence Centre, AIC., the achievement of a charging system and network of charging stations for electric cars. After getting giants of the industry, such as Mercedes and Toyota, to develop and research this technology at Boroa, now it is the turn of the other significant pillar in this project, the enterprises which provide the energy for ecological vehicles. The circle is almost closed and it is composed by solid pieces which are a guarantee for success.
The President of Bizkaia, Jose Luis Bilbao, and the President of Iberdrola explained the significance of this partnership during the signing of this agreement. Bilbao has stated that the development of green cars is "a challenge" for society and Bizkaia would like to "take part" in its inception. The President highlighted the importance of counting with the support of a Basque company which is also a "worldwide reference" and adding new partners to another "reference": the Automotive Intelligence Center (AIC).
Sánchez Galán has assured that the protocol agreement reinforces the "centennial commitment" made by Iberdrola "with the land where it was born". "Every time progress occurs in this country we want to be part of it. And the automotive industry is very important in the CAV", said Iberdrola's executive chairman. They both pointed out their intention of strengthening ties by means of new collaboration agreements.
This protocol agreement, subscribed yesterday, channels the flow of information flow provides a space in which to share innovation levers. The Basque electrical company puts at the disposal of firms conducting research at the AIC, their knowledge regarding technological progress and standards of infrastructures for charging this type of vehicles. Iberdrola will collaborate in the development of charging stations and the technology needed in several European countries.
It will provide information "from outside" the vehicle to its interior and shall receive knowledge "from inside" through the relationship reached with the manufacturers. The lead and plug shall virtually link both lines of investigation, summarized Galán.
The battery and the power supply.
Unresolved matter
The main obstacle which has impeded its launch will also collaborate with AIC in the development of green car batteries. The electric car's low autonomy has confined it to the city. Making long trips using a battery which runs down in just over 100 kilometres without a network of charging stations is unconceivable.
The research focuses on how to increase the battery's power without increasing its size and on reducing its significant impact on the current price. The other unresolved matter which is precisely a network of stations. Advancing in these two lines of investigation shall involve being "at the peak of technology" in this industry, an objective for Iberdrola.
"We aren't going to release a car the day after tomorrow or in six months, but we want to be present in everything and participate in the innovation and technology developments required for the future of electric cars; this is why we have signed this agreement", stressed the President of Bizkaia. This partnership is significantly future oriented, but it shall dynamize the industry from this day onwards.
