The Provincial Council of Bizkaia hands Doctors of the World and UNICEF 140.000 euros for emergency projects

Today the Provincial Council of Bizkaia approved, through Govern Council, a total of 140.000 euros as aid for Haití following the earthquake which devastated this Caribbean country last week. This aid shall be given to Doctors of the World and UNICEF as a direct grant-in-aid in order to carry out emergency projects.

As far as Doctors of the World is concerned, 70.000 euros have been granted by the Provincial Institution and shall be assigned to minor surgery interventions for three months and traumatology in peripheral areas, as main sanitary hospitals in central areas of the capital shall be used by military and humanitarian aid, informed the Provincial Institution.

This association's first intervention team is comprised by two surgery teams (an anaesthetist, operating room nurses and surgeons and/or traumatologists), as well as a coordination and logistic team.

The other 70.000 shall be used by UNICEF to help the emergency operation they started in order to serve the basic needs of the people, such as water, food and medical assistance.

The grant-in-aid given by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia shall be assigned, specifically, to water purifying tablets, basic family water kits for 10 families, as well as coordination, transport and distribution kits.

The Provincial Council of Bizkaia, through the President's Office, has reserved an account for aids in emergency cases such as the case regarding Haití.
